On this day: Bale wants Real Madrid talks, battle over Suarez's buy-out clause

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all feature.

The new Premier League season is now under three weeks away with the Football League campaign set to start in under a fortnight.

The transfer rumour mill is working overtime at the moment as sides look to improve their teams up and down the leagues and all over the country.

We’ve taken a look back at this day last year to see which stories were making the headlines.

‘Bale wants to speak with Real Madrid’

Gareth Bale made it clear to Tottenham Hotspur that he wanted to talk with Real Madrid over a move to the Bernabeu.

The Welshman was Spurs’ stand out player last season, which prompted the interest of the Spanish giants.

Bale eventually completed a move to Los Blancos in a world record deal worth around £85 million.

‘Arsenal won’t increase Suarez bid’

The Mirror ran a report which suggested Arsenal would not improve their £40 million bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan was the subject of intense interest from the Gunners last summer as they aimed to trigger his buy-out clause.

They did so with the £40 million plus £1 offer, which Liverpool’s owner John Henry later revealed the Reds had ignored.

‘Chelsea to delay new Rooney bid’

Chelsea were reportedly preparing a new offer for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Rooney was linked with the Blues last summer and they reportedly wanted to give him the chance to play in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match.

The Blues were never able to get a deal done, with Rooney signing a new deal at United last season.
