There is certainly a buzz amongst Manchester United fans at the moment and despite action on the incoming transfers front being a bit slow, there is still a tremendous excitement watching Louis Van Gaal stamp his mark on the club.
The pre-season games against Los Angeles Galaxy and Roma have been intriguing with Tom Cleverley captaining the side in the latter a huge talking point. There is another chance to see Van Gaal's side in action tonight as they face Inter Milan and Chris Smalling has revealed an insight into the Dutchman's pre-match preparation methods.
Speaking to the official Manchester United website season victories and the camp is in high spirits.
"First we do a lot of video work on the opposing team. Then, when we do our 11 versus 11 games in training, one team is set up like the opposition so they will copy their traits and their formation so that, come game day, we're much better prepared to cope with whatever they throw at us."
The preparation has led to 7-0 and 3-2 victories over LA Galaxy and Roma, but tonight they face a familiar player in Nemanja Vidic and his new Inter Milan side. "It will be weird seeing him in an opposition shirt and he will give us a test as well," he added. "If it does happen I'll look forward to it. I'd like a tussle with him at the set-plays. I'd like to get one past him."
Smalling also added that the new formation incorporated by Van Gaal is becoming more and more familiar with each game. "Each performance is giving us more confidence and especially with a new formation as well. The wins are not the overriding point in pre-season but they're a big factor in getting our confidence up. We're getting that with each training session and each match."
