Very few people expected the Reds to make the giant leap from seventh the previous season to within two points of the title, an improvement of 23 points during the space of a year.
However, this summer the club lost a talismanic figure in Luis Suarez to Barcelona and have seen several new faces arrive at the club as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to reshape his squad.
Despite the loss of Suarez, Sturridge is confident Liverpool can be challengers again, even with the underdogs tag.
He is quoted by several sources, saying: “This season maybe we still are the underdogs with the signings the other clubs have made.
“Arsenal spending big money, Chelsea buying two top players in (Diego) Costa and (Cesc) Fabregas and Man City will always be strong with the players they sign. The list goes on… Tottenham and Manchester United.
“It’s going to be a great season for us to show what we can do again. “Regardless if we are the underdogs or the favourites, it won’t change our mentality.
“We are a young, hungry squad that are looking to put our stamp down not just in the Premier League but European football as well.
“We will try to move forward as a squad with a great manager behind us who has got the exact same mentality.
“He is hungry for success. That is the motto - everybody is hungry for success here.”
The bookies certainly see Liverpool as outsiders for both the Premier League title and the Champions League in the season ahead - though on the domestic front they're not as long as they were at the beginning of the last campaign.
Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal are all at shorter prices for the title this season than Liverpool. The Reds are currently 11/1 to end their 25-year wait for the title, whilst they are priced as long as 28/1 to repeat their European feat of 10 years previously.
There seems to be little doubt that Liverpool are hungry for success, in particular Rodgers who uses the word a lot both to describe his attitude and that of the players. It's doubtful Liverpool will care about any such tag that comes their way, they'll just try and concentrate on their performance and the results that follow.
