We all know how it eventually worked out, but a year ago today, Gareth Bale was reportedly distraught after his then-club Tottenham Hotspur were said to have no intention of considering a world-record £86million bid for the Welshman.
The Observer claimed Levy was playing hardball, but not long after, the Welshman would get his wish.
Fabregas ‘agrees to join Manchester United’
That was the claim of the Sunday Express exactly a year ago today, with the report claiming a secret meeting had taken place between the player’s agent Darren Dein and United’s Ed Woodward.
The report claimed Fabregas preferred a move to United rather than a return to his former club Arsenal. But less than 12 months later, it was Chelsea who the Spanish international would sign for.
Kinnear targets Champions League
Newcastle United’s director of football was targeting a return to the Champions League 12 months ago today. As reported by the Mail on Sunday, Kinnear had lofty aspirations and spoke candidly about his intention to take the Magpies back into the European elite.
“What I see in the long term is help to put together a squad to get this club back into the Champions League,” Kinnear was quoted as saying.
