News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata believes boss Louis van Gaal has a ‘winning mentality’ that will see the Red Devils back to success this term.
“After the game when we had given two goals away he was not very happy, but I think his way is that of a great manager,” Mata said.
“He is very honest with the players, he says what he thinks and has a clear way of understanding football. We feel the manager is a great manager who has brought a strong mentality. This club is made for a winning mentality and I think he has it.”
Louis van Gaal has ‘denied’ there is a ‘problem’ with Wilfried Zaha after the England youngster was left out the team that won 3-2 over Roma.
Asked if Zaha was fit, he replied: "There is no Man United player fit. Maybe the boys who [didn’t go to the World Cup] are a little bit more fit but they also not fit. I can [use] six strikers; maybe next Zaha will be picked because he is working good and hard, doing all I require and demand. There is no problem."
Reports suggest Wilfried Zaha has been told to do a ‘double warm down’ session following the team’s victory over Roma, leading to further speculation over his condition.
In team news, Rafael has left the pre-season tour of the USA due to an injury suffered on Friday against Roma in Denver.
"As he was unlikely to participate in the remaining tour games, returning to the training complex affords the best overall option for his recovery in time to continue pre-season preparation when the team returns," read a statement on the club’s website, regarding the fullback.
The manager believes the squad are on a ‘learning curve’ on the tour as they develop their setup and strategy ahead of the new campaign but hopes the players will improve and do better.
"We did not play a good match," he said after the win.
In transfer news, the Daily Mail reports United are set to bid £30 million for Juan Cuadrado following the Colombian attacker’s display at the World Cup in Brazil but reports also suggest Barcelona could be vying for his signature this summer.
Meanwhile, summer target Arturo Vidal could leave Juventus who are described as ‘cash strapped’ but, according to the same source, not for Old Trafford amid suggestions Louis van Gaal has ‘moved on’ to other options for his midfield.
Elsewhere, Roma have slapped a £79 million price tag on midfielder Kevin Strootman who has been linked with the Red Devils for several months, after the club’s manager insisted the player would not be sold for any less than €100 million.
“What can I say about the rumours (about Strootman joining United),” explained manager Rudi Garcia.
“Maybe after a three-digit offer (i.e. 100 million euros), then we will sit down and think about it.”
And finally, The Mirror claims Angel Di Maria is ‘unhappy’ at Real Madrid and could leave the Spanish capital to join United this summer after months of speculation over his future at the Bernabeu.
