The former Manchester United full-back says hard work and focus will go a long way to Shaw being a success at Old Trafford.
Evra won five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League during a successful period at Old Trafford, someone who Irwin classed as 'one of the best full-backs in the Premier League, if not the world'.
But Shaw, who moved from Southampton for a fee of around £30 million has been the man selected to replace Evra, and Irwin says Shaw has the opportunity to be United's first choice left-back for many years to come.
He told the official Man United website: “My advice is just to listen and learn and work as hard as possible. Get your head down and give everything. That’s all that any coach demands. It’s also important to focus on the football because it’s easy to be distracted when you’re 18 or 19.
"He’s here for a reason, he did fantastically well at Southampton and now he’s got a great opportunity to be the full-back for Manchester United for a lot of years to come."
Irwin has tipped the 19-year-old to get better under manager Louis van Gaal. In many ways van Gaal's appointment at Old Trafford seems to be ideal for Shaw, given the reputation that the Dutchman has for playing young players so he can mould them into the kind of footballer he would like them to be.
Shaw has arrived for a big fee is on big wages and that itself will bring pressure, along with replacing a favourite within the side amongst the fans, and those in the dressing room. There seems to be little doubt he has the talent to play in a side that competes at the highest level.
