David Ospina's performances at the World Cup made him an Arsenal player

Wenger has revealed that Ospina's form at the World Cup, which compares favourably to Wojciech Szczesny's last season, was the reason he signed him

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he signed new goalkeeper, David Ospina, on the back of his World Cup performances.

Ospina will complete a £3 million move to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming week and it was his performances in Brazil, which convinced Wenger to take the plunge.

Most of the Colombian plaudits were aimed at new Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, but it appears that he was not the only man to impress for his nation during the international tournament.

Ospina was a reliable stopper for Colombia and Wenger said he jumped ahead of his other potential targets because of this.

“We had three or four candidates but I decided during the World Cup to sign him,” the Frenchman said.

“I’ve known him for a long time. He went to Nice a few years ago and became a very important player. You can see he has quality.”

Wenger will hope that this quality can see him provide competition for Wojciech Szczesny in the upcoming season.

The Arsenal boss has confirmed that Szczesny will remain his first-choice for the start of the summer, but his position is under considerable threat due to Ospina’s arrival.

Indeed, it was easy to see why Ospina caught the eye at the World Cup, as his performances there were better than Szczesny’s over the course of last season.

The new signing made more saves, claimed more crosses and was better with his feet whilst representing his nation than the Polish stopper was in England’s top tier last year.

His arrival, therefore, should be the warning sign for Szczesny to up his game. The current Arsenal number one has faced competition from the likes of Vito Mannone and Lukas Fabianski previously in his Arsenal career, but neither posses the quality that Ospina does.

The hope for Wenger is that both ‘keepers will push each-other on to new levels, but if Sczcesny doesn’t improve quickly he could lose his place between the sticks to the new arrival.
