David James on Ospina: Arsenal signed the wrong goalkeeper

Former Liverpool stopper says David Ospina is good, but not as talented as Keylor Navas.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of David Ospina on Sunday, with the goalkeeper adding real competition for Wojciech Szczesny.

Ospina shone for Colombia at the World Cup, carrying on his consistent form for Nice he has displayed in Ligue 1 since 2008.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper's fee was officially undisclosed, but is believed to be in the region of €4 million, a potential bargain.

Former Liverpool and England goalkeeper David James, has argued however that the Gunners signed the wrong man, and Keylor Navas should have been their target instead.

The Costa Rican is expected to formalise a switch to Real Madrid shortly, although conceivably Arsenal could have signed him if they moved earlier than the Spaniards.

He is however set to be double the price, the fee required, and €8 million release clause in his Levante contract.

Here is a look at how the two compared during the World Cup:

TeamSaves / appsDive Save / appsGood High Claim / appsAccurate Goal Kicks / appsApps
Keylor Navas Costa Rica 4.20 1.40 1.40 5.00 5
David Ospina Colombia 3.20 1.20 2.40 5.60 5

While Navas edged it in terms of saves, and diving saves per game, the difference is narrow when considering the gap in price tag.

Ospina also performed better in terms of claiming crosses, an area which David James himself famously struggled with.

There is not a lot to suggest the ex-Liverpool stopper is clearly right, it will remain a matter of opinion and preference, but there will not be too many Arsenal fans displeased with the solid addition of Ospina, certainly as a clear cut first choice is not what Arsene Wenger was looking for with the signing and money invested.
