David Ospina recently became Arsenal’s third summer signing for a reported £3million.
The Colombia goalkeeper impressed at the World Cup, to such an extent that Gunners manager Arsene Wenger made his move.
It will be interesting to see how Ospina fares when competing with current Arsenal number one Wojciech Szczesny. But for now, in the latest in our series on the numbers behind a player’s career to date, we take a closer look at the 25-year-old.
2 – The number of trophies Ospina has won in his career to date. The goalkeeper was part of the Atletico Nacional side that won back-to-back Colombian titles in 2006 and 2007. However, this was at the start of his career, when he was merely a squad player.
210 – The number of club appearances the player has made so far. He made 11 appearances for Atletico Nacional and played 199 times for French club Nice.
70 – The number of clean-sheets Ospina had kept in his club career. The goalkeeper kept five shut-outs at Atletico Nacional and 65 during his time at Nice.
245 – The number of goals Arsenal’s new signing has conceded while on club duty. He conceded eight in his time in Colombia and 237 while in France.
5 – The number of times Ospina has been sent off in his club career. That is something Arsene Wenger will clearly want to eradicate. He also has 11 bookings to date.
48 – The number of caps the stopper has for his country. He made his debut in February 2007 and has gone on to make 48 appearances so far. He also featured 12 times for Colombia’s under-20 side.
Verdict – Ospina proved this summer that he is an excellent goalkeeper and for a reported £3million, Arsenal have signed an absolute bargain.
It will be interesting to see who starts the campaign as Wenger’s number one but it is clear the competition will be considerable and the presence of each will surely bringing out the best in the other. Another bit of canny business from the Arsenal boss.
