Last night saw the Louis van Gaal revolution continue as Manchester United walked to a 3-2 win against AS Roma in the scorching heat of Denver, Colorado. The Dutchman followed up his opening victory - a 7-0 thrashing of LA Galaxy - with this result, which left United fans even more excited about the new season.
But it was also fair to say that LvG would not have been pleased at the scoreline. United were 3-0 up on the day and it should have remained a comfortable scoreline. However a penalty from Francesco Totti - and this wondergoal from Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic made things look far closer at the full-time whistle.
Pjanic is obviously very talented, and capable of such a dastardly goal, but many were wondering what goalkeeper Ben Amos was doing to get beaten from such a speculative distance.
Amos entered the field for the second half - replacing Sam Johnstone between the sticks. However he was left embarrassed as this shot looped over his head.
But call it a wondergoal, why blame the keeper?
LvG does not agree. Van Gaal astonishingly laid the blame solely at Amos' door after the incident, telling the media:
“I am nearly 63 years old and I run when the ball is flying four seconds, fifty metres. What do you think?”
For Amos it will be a shattering blow to his confidence and a definitive sign that he should begin to look elsewhere for employment next campaign. At 24-years-old it is in fact time he began looking elsewhere for regular first-team football anyway. Van Gaal might have just given him the nudge he needed.
