United fans react on Twitter to Tom Cleverley captaincy against Roma

Tom Cleverley was made captain of Manchester United in their pre-season match against Roma, so what did the fans think?

New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is clearly a man who is not afraid to make big decisions.  But with the captaincy up for grabs this summer following the departure of both Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, few expected Tom Cleverley to be in with a shout.

And yet it seems he just might be, after van Gaal gave the England midfielder the armband for the pre-season friendly against Roma on Saturday night.

Cleverley has been much maligned in recent times, and yet van Gaal clearly saw enough in him to ask him to lead out the team in Denver.

Things also went pretty well on the pitch, with United leading 3-0 at half-time and ultimately running out 3-2 winners.

But Cleverley failed to perform on the day, as did many of his teammates who appeared affected by the conditions.  And yet a win is a win, and as captain the 24-year-old has a 100% record.  He can even argue that when he left the pitch United were strolling to a victory that ultimately looked a little tougher to secure.

After the game, we took to Twitter to see what United fans thought of the decision to make Cleverley captain, and you can find a selection of what we found below:
