Manchester United are not interested in Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij according to the latest report.
The Netherlands international has been widely tipped to join Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer. However, Football-Orange.com has picked up on a report from RTV Rijnmond suggesting United are not interested in the 22-year-old.
While there had been suggestions that de Vrij’s proposed move to Lazio had fallen through, the report claims the Italian side remain the only club with serious interest in the player. It adds that United will not try to sign the him this summer.
If that is true, it raises questions as to exactly who van Gaal intends to bring in.
United are lacking numbers at the back following the exits of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. And with the club tipped to play a 3-5-2 formation next season, van Gaal will need one or two new defenders to ensure he has enough strength in depth to cover for injuries and suspensions.
With Mats Hummels highly unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund any time soon, that could leave Thomas Vermaelen and Daley Blind as the most likely summer signings, if United can convince their current clubs to do business, that is.
