Fantasy Football Focus 2014/15: Chelsea

With the new season looming it's time to assess your fantasy football options. Today's focus will be on Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho's side are expected to improve on last season's third place finish and are favourites to lift the Premier League title come May next year at this point.

The Blues have already strengthened the squad by adding Diego Costa, Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas and Didier Drogba and have also seen Thibaut Courtois and Kurt Zouma join the side following loan spells.

Chelsea will be a strong force throughout the season and several players should be considered, especially given their favourable opening fixtures though with no real budget options to pick from, where should you be looking from a fantasy football perspective?

Worth a gamble

GK - Thibaut Courtois - The young Belgian goalkeeper will feature for Chelsea this year after three highly successful seasons with Atletico Madrid that was capped with La Liga glory last term. Courtois looks set to battle with long-term first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech for the starting role but Mourinho will surely have the Belgian at the forefront of his plans having ensured that he would stay with The Blues this campaign. If he can seal the starting role in the league, the 22-year-old will be an excellent option despite a relatively high price as Mourinho's side conceded the fewest goals in the division last year (27).

MID - Andre Schurrle - The German winger enjoyed a solid first season in English football last year but has much more to offer and will hope to force his way into the starting lineup on a more regular basis. He made 30 appearances in the league last season, scoring eight goals with two assists, but only started in 15 of those games. If Schurrle can become a regular on the right-side of midfield then he will be guaranteed to score points.

MID - Cesc Fabregas - Fabregas has made a return to the Premier League with Chelsea following an estimated £30 million switch from Barcelona and the former Arsenal man will hope to shine under Mourinho. His position in the side is unclear at the moment, as he may be fielder in a deep-lying playmaker role alongside Nemanja Matic or Ramires, with Oscar likely to play the number 10 role. However, Fabregas can also operate in the false nine position and could also be used in the role Frank Lampard operated so successfully under Mourinho during his first tenure as manager. It may be best to wait and see where Fabregas plays before placing him in your side as he must be an attacking threat to gain regular points.

FOR - Didier Drogba - The Chelsea legend has returned to Stamford Bridge on a one-year deal and will look to add to his 100 Premier League goals with the club in the upcoming campaign. However, the Ivorian will have to battle for a starting role with Diego Costa and may have to settle for appearances in Europe and the domestic cup competitions. If the 36-year-old can feature regularly again he will be an attractive option, though there may be better options for the price around the league.

DEF - Gary Cahill - The centre-back was excellent alongside John Terry last year and will hope to continue to flourish alongside the Chelsea captain. He made 30 appearances in the league, scoring and assisting one goal and only picked up two yellow cards during the entire season. Cahill will be a regular in the lineup and will pick up plenty of points in a solid defence once again.

MID - Eden Hazard - Hazard came under some criticism last term but was excellent from a fantasy perspective and was Chelsea's top-scoring player as he scored 14 goals with seven assists in 35 appearances. The Belgian will wear the number 10 shirt next season and will thrive from the addition's of Diego Costa and Drogba as he will have more to aim for in the box when he chooses to cross. The 23-year-old will likely operate on the left but will look to come inside and get shots off whenever possible and should definitely be considered.

FOR - Diego Costa - Costa has been brought in to score the goals that will bring the title back to Stamford Bridge as Samuel Eto'o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres struggled to perform well last season. The powerful Spanish striker scored 27 goals in 35 La Liga appearances and will hope to hit the ground running in English football. With such quality around him, Costa will have endless chances to get goals and will surely thrive as the lone striker if he can replicate his Atletico Madrid form.
