It is reported yesterday in the Spanish press that Real Madrid were preparing a move for Lukaku, if their ambitious attempt to sign Radamel Falcao on loan from AS Monaco fell through.
Then there was the video of Roberto Martinez in Thailand telling Everton fans, with tongue firmly in cheek, that The Toffees would get their man.
But according to some it is neither of these clubs who will get Lukaku this summer. It is being reported by some in Germany that VfL Wolfsburg are the team in the lead when it comes to his signature.
Interestingly the journalist heavily pushing this news is Philip Harmeling, the Wolfsburg expert who broke the news of Kevin De Bruyne's Wolfsburg deal in January.
Good news for VfL Wolfsburg! Romelu Lukaku is really near to joins VfL for a 25mio€ transfer. More info to come.— Philip Harmeling (@PhilipHarmeling) July 26, 2014
It is similar in style then to that of Jan Age Fjortoft breaking the news of Julian Draxler going to Arsenal, after being the first man to call the Mesut Ozil to Arsenal deal - which of course proved to be false, so Everton or Chelsea fans who want Lukaku at their club can still remain optimistic.
Wolfsburg themselves have now spoken out about the interest in the player.
The club's manager Dieter Hecking spoke of Lukaku yesterday - admitting he would be interested in the player:
But now their sporting director has denied any immediate interest in the player. Speaking to Bild he was asked if the club had bid the rumoured €28 million on the player, to which he responded:
"Most definitely not. But he's a good player. And everyone knows we are looking for a new striker."
So contradicting reports on the future of Lukaku continue as it looks like Wolfsburg, Everton and potentially Real Madrid look set to do battle for his signature.
