Arsenal lost 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls last night with a very weak side on show.
Arsenal played their second first-team pre-season friendly last night but it ended in a rather flat performance and subsequent 1-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls.
With much of the attention on the Arsenal legend Thierry Henry it was the son of another former Arsenal striker who got the winning goal. Bradley Wright-Phillips, formerly of Charlton and Southampton, scoring in the 32nd minute for the only goal of the game.
But Arsenal fans will not take to much interest of the result. First of all, as ever, it was pre-season - and the end goal is to get match fitness accurate for the start of a new campaign.
Secondly was the team Arsenal fielded.
With Yaya Sanogo injured along with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Lukas Podolski all allowed extra time to rest their weary World Cup bones Chuba Akpom was the only recognised striker in the squad.
Tomas Rosicky started the game up front and in a midfield five of Santi Cazorla, Gedion Zelalem, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta - there was a serious lack of width.
Carl Jenkinson started at right-back, a player who knows his future lies away from The Emirates and perhaps the weakest area of the pitch was at centre-back - where youngster Isaac Hayden and left-back by trade Nacho Monreal featured.
Monreal is known as something of a utility player. In the past he has filled in on the wing or in central midfield but at the heart of defence is not usually a position you would expect to see the Spaniard.
So how did Arsenal fans think he got on?
Here is a selection of Tweets from the Gunners faithful...
Monreal was the centre back? LMAO— Maich (@M_keny) July 27, 2014
And what about Monreal. Out of position but worked hard for the team and much better in the 2nd.— nigel (@nigeryan) July 27, 2014
Chill. We had Monreal and Hayden playing CB. I'm surprised it was only 1-0... #ArsenalNYC— Chris (@chrismd10) July 27, 2014
The only Premier league side to lose to an MLS side? Monreal as CB? ffs.— DAVID OSPINA (@DavidtheGooner) July 27, 2014
I don't know why people were panicking! FFS Monreal played at CB, that says it all! #AFC— Kamalluddeen Sajö (@Kamals97) July 27, 2014
Hayden did alright, Monreal looked fine out of position. Full backs at centre backs is the Arsenal way— Aidán (@BeltransMole23) July 27, 2014
Had a great time at the game despite the result-Monreal looked sharp at CB and a lot of maturity from a young team pic.twitter.com/G7DueQhAUK— Patrick Butler (@NutmegGooner) July 26, 2014
Monreal at CB took the pride out of it tbh— - (@NickWestonAFC) July 26, 2014
Arsenal fans moaning about the result of a match where we had Hayden & Monreal as CBs & Rosicky as our striker? Get a grip— El Loco Goose (@CrazyGoose) July 26, 2014
