New Tottenham Hotspur signing Michel Vorm has revealed that he spoke to Rafael van der Vaart prior to leaving Swansea City.
Spurs signed Vorm for a reported £3.5million, and the 30-year-old will now compete with Hugo Lloris for a starting spot at White Hart Lane. But while some have questioned how wise it is to move to a club where such a talented goalkeeper is already well established, Vorm had no doubt he was making the right decision.
In an interview with Voetbal International, the Netherlands international said, “I spoke with many people about Tottenham, among others Rafael van der Vaart, who has played here himself. He only said positive things about the club.”
Van der Vaart spent two seasons at Tottenham, in which time he became a fan favourite, scoring 28 goals in 77 appearances. Now playing for Hamburg in the Bundesliga, it is clear the 31-year-old has good memories of his time in North London.
And those memories have seemingly played a part in his countryman making the move to Spurs this summer.
It is now up to Vorm to usurp Lloris as Tottenham’s number one; something that will be easier said than done. But given his talent between the sticks, it is not impossible.
