Manchester United's pre-season preparations continued tonight with a 3-2 win over Roma, just days after sweeping Los Angeles Galaxy aside in a 7-0 thrashing. Tonight's game in Denver, Colorado, was a much tougher test for Louis van Gaal's side, but they led 3-0 at the break.
Two goals from Wayne Rooney either side of a Juan Mata strike had the Red Devils coasting at the interval, only for Pjanic and Francesco Totti to haul the Italians back into the game. It finished 3-2, but Pjanic's goal was one of the big talking points of the game.
3-0 down and needing something special to salvage anything from this warm-up match, Pjanic picked the ball up at least five yards inside his own half, and spotting United goalkeeper Ben Amos off his line, unleashed a stunning shot that looped over Amos' head and into the net.
United could only admire and wonder 'what if?' given that Pjanic was rumoured to be a top target for previous boss David Moyes during the January transfer window. Rated at around £20m-£25m back then, the Bosnian is no doubt worth more to Roma given his exceptional performances in the second half of the season and at the World Cup.
United still need help in midfield but van Gaal will be confident that new signing Ander Herrera will provide some creativity in midfield. Whether he can score stunners like Pjanic's goal remains to be seen, but Roma boss Rudi Garcia will certaily be happy that United didn't land the 24-year-old earlier this year.
