The La Liga champions sold the Brazilian-born Spain striker in a deal worth £32 million for the striker who scored 36 goals in all competitions last term and fired Atletico Madrid to their Spanish title win.
However, that wasn’t enough for the president of his former club, Enrique Cerezo who believes the Rojiblancos new signing for £17 million from Bayern Munich is the better striker.
Mario Mandzukic scored 26 goals in all competitions last term for Bayern Munich despite not necessarily always being started by coach Pep Guardiola.
Mandzukic scored a goal every 112 minutes last term for the Bundesliga champions compared to Diego Costa’s goal every 109 minutes for Atletico Madrid yet the club president prefers the Croatian.
"Costa is a fantastic striker but Mandzukic is a player we really like and who we will adjust our game to,” explained Cerezo.
"For me, Mandzukic is the best centre-forward in Europe."
The club president is entitled to his opinion but no less than 39 players across the top leagues in Europe scored more goals than the 28-year-old and one of them was Diego Costa.
Costa came behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who, in fact, aren’t centre-forwards so, in terms of goals, Diego Costa was in fact probably the best centre-forward in Spain last year.
He just so happens to play for Chelsea now and perhaps that is colouring the Atletico Madrid president’s opinion.
