The Liverpool boss has been highlighting the similarities that Coutinho has to the Croat.
Coutinho has had an impressive season so far by being the stand-out performer in the Reds three pre-season matches so far and comes into this season fresh after being overlooked by Luiz Felipe Scolari for the Brazil squad at this summer's World Cup.
Despite that, Rodgers rates the talented Brazilian highly, and compared his role to a similar one that former Tottenham man Modric has adopted during his career.
The Reds boss is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: "He is never going to be prolific like Luis or other strikers. He is more like a (Luka) Modric type – he is the brain behind the team and gets them moving and playing.
“But you don’t have to score goals to be an exciting player and he has shown that in the season and a half he has been with us.
“At 22 years of age he has got a lot of improvement to make. The longer he is with us and understanding our way of working that learning will continue.”
It is high praise given that Modric has been part of a side that has just become European Champions, as well as having an outstanding effect on Tottenham during his time at White Hart Lane - where he helped them achieve Champions League qualification.
Coutinho may not be at the level of Modric yet but in terms of their style there is a degree of similarity. Let's not forget that Modric is 28 and Coutinho still has a long way to go in terms of his development. But they do adopt similar positions very well, but perhaps Modric's experience allows him to be a more versatile player and play a deeper role for his side.
