Giggs' rallying call - Let's show some pride this season

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs wants to see the players to take some pride in their performances this season.

United endured their worst-ever Premier League season last term as they slipped to 12 defeats and finished a lowly seventh - a whopping 22 points behind fierce local rivals and champions Manchester City.

David Moyes was sacked in April, with Giggs overseeing a handful of games until the end of the season, and United announced that Louis van Gaal would be taking over once his World Cup duties with the Netherlands were complete.

The Dutchman finally got to work last week, and enjoyed a superb start in his first match, as the Red Devils ran out 7-0 winners against LA Galaxy in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Speaking on the club's tour of the United States, Giggs, who ended his legendary playing career earlier this summer, wants to see the club's players regain the spring in their step was there when they won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season.

The Mirror quotes Giggs as saying: "The players have got to take a bit of pride in how they perform, train and play. There’s no doubt that few players lived up to the standards of what they’re capable of doing last season. They’re not bad players. They’re all good players.

“It doesn’t change overnight, but last season’s league position showed that we didn’t perform individually or as a team. The way back for them has started already, in training.

“There’s no time to waste. The World Cup means some don’t have much time to prepare, but the recovery has to start now, getting some kind of form going in to the [season opening] Swansea game.

“I’m confident they’ll show it. They’ve shown it so far in training. It’s good and they are enjoying it."

United have spent around £60 million so far on Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw and Van Gaal begins life in the Premier League with a visit of Swansea City on August 16.
