Ashley Young hoping to thrive in new-look Manchester United

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has said that he is hoping to thrive in Louis van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation this coming season.

Van Gaal took charge of his first match on Thursday and the Red Devils ran out convincing 7-0 winners over LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Danny Welbeck scored the first goal of the LVG regime after 12 minutes, before Wayne Rooney added a quick brace shortly before half time.

Academy graduate Reece James added two of his own after half time, before Young netted a double late on, and the former Aston Villa winger is hoping to recapture the form that convinced United to pay £18 million for him in Van Gaal's new-look set-up this term.

He told the club's official website: “It was fluid. There was a lot of space for us to get on the ball and LA Galaxy were not able to cope with that. We tried it in training and we have tried it in a match scenario. This will be the formation we take going forward.

"It was a great feeling, it is pre-season and we want to get our fitness up and prepare for the new season as best we can. We have got some great games out here and we wanted to get off to a winning start and I felt that was a great performance.

“In pre-season, you can take your foot off the gas in the second half but we had a new team that went out there with a new formation that I think suited us perfectly. I don't think LA Galaxy were able to cope with that, we got on the scoresheet in the first half and we wanted to get more goals. We managed to do that in the second half."

Van Gaal may need to recruit a couple of defenders this summer if he is to stick with three centre-backs following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

United currently only have Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans as their three established defenders, and it is something that Van Gaal acknowledged after the midweek victory.

"I have no more defenders so I have to pick a player [Darren Fletcher] who can do the job but he is not so suitable for this position," said Van Gaal.

United have been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund's World Cup winner, Mats Hummels, but long-term target Ezequiel Garay moved to Zenit St Petersburg earlier this summer.
