Here's a clue, he wouldn't be the only one that was in awe of this virtuoso.
New signing Ander Herrera has been discussing some of the players that inspired him as a young boy playing on the streets of Bilbao.
After arriving from his home town club Athletic Bilbao for €36.5 million this summer, the 24-year-old inevitably had plenty of footballing heroes that he aspired to be like.
And surprisingly, or not when you consider the talent he had, Reds' icon Eric Cantona was one of the names that cropped up.
“I liked his character," Herrera told the club's official website. "He was a winner and always worked hard, he never lost one ball and was always thinking about the victory.
"This group of players [at United] has those same characteristics. We always want to win, we want to play well for the Man United supporters and Eric Cantona had those characteristics. Of course, he had personality too."
Herrera didn't stop there though, listing several others that possessed great personality, and praising the character of the players the club bring in.
“It was not only Cantona who had personality," he continued. "Ryan Giggs as well, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. United do not only sign good players, but workers as well. United sign people who work hard, train hard and who are good professionals.
"It is a dream for me to be here because this history is very big and now I have the chance to play here. I have the possibility to show my own character for United.”
The talismanic Frenchman referred to as 'King Eric' by Old Trafford supporters has been voted the greatest player ever to turn out for United, scoring 69 goals in 220 games and playing his part in the beginning, and surge to power of Sir Alex Ferguson's all conquering 1990s side.
Blessed with incredible talent, composure with the ball, and unquestionable belief in himself, United fans will be hoping at least one of these will be staple qualities of their new Spanish midfielder.
Because if he has even half the career of Cantona he will certainly be the first United great of the Van Gaal era.
