Transfer Bin: Arsenal linked to £9m Manchester United winger

According to reports in Portugal today, Arsenal will make a £9m offer for Manchester United winger Nani - but this one ends up in our transfer bin.

The Gunners ended their nine-year trophy drought in May with their 3-2 FA Cup final win over Hull City, and the excitement from Arsenal supporters has been sustained through the summer months, after manager Arsene Wenger secured the blockbuster signing of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, and then added French international right back Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle too.

Further attacking signings are expected though, after Olivier Giroud struggled to carry the workload on his own last season. Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo offered little in the way of support, and with the former now a free agent and the latter still looking incredibly raw, fans want to see another striker.

Yet, according to A Bola, Wenger is poised to make a £9m bid to sign Manchester United winger Nani. The Portuguese international, 27, has been a bit-part figure over the last 12 months for United, and with new manager Louis van Gaal reportedly looking to sign Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina, Nani's days at Old Trafford look numbered.

However, that doesn't mean Arsenal should sign him. Nani has continually flattered to deceive for some time now, offering little to United. He seems to have lost all his confidence, all his goalscoring threat - as well as a yard of pace. It's therefore little surprise to hear that United could sell him, but what would Arsenal want with him?

The Gunners should use Sanchez out wide rather than as a No. 9, and with the likes of Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Serge Gnabry all vying for places out wide, there seems little logic in adding another one - particularly one with such poor end product in Nani.

Instead, Wenger should look to give minutes to youngsters like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gnabry instead of forking out for a player like Nani, whose best days are clearly behind him. The two clubs seem willing to work on deals, with discussions ongoing over Thomas Vermaelen's potential move to United, but it seems massively unlikely that Wenger would take a chance on revitalising Nani's career.
