Two goals apiece from Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young, debutant Reece James and a single goal from Danny Welbeck all contributed to a highlight-reel 7-0 thumping over LA Galaxy at the Pasadena Rosebowl to mark a monstrous start to Louis van Gaal's reign as Manchester United manager this week.
Summer signings Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera both featured as van Gaal partnered United mainstay Ryan Giggs in the dugout for the first time as the Dutchman engineered a performance that he described as "a surprise [with] beautiful goals from beautiful attacks."
He is quoted by the official website of FIFA to have said: "We introduced a new system that we have only played two times on the training pitch 11 v 11 but the boys are willing to pick up the information. It is fantastic how they have performed. Last week, ten players who played tonight were not even in our training complex."
Galaxy boss Bruce Arena marveled at van Gaal and the way in which United played.
He said: "I have nothing but the greatest respect for the show that Manchester United put on. A bunch of guys out there fighting for jobs and it looked that way.
"It was a real lesson for a lot of our players."
