On this day: What are Arsenal smoking?; Thiago 'was very close' to United

On the 24th July 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 24th July 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 24th July 2013…

'What are they smoking?'

The day after Arsenal made a bid for Liverpool's star player Luis Suarez and Liverpool owner John W Henry had an interesting response to the bid from The Gunners.

Arsene Wenger and co had caught wind of a £40 million release clause in his deal, so bid £40m-plus-a-£1 for the player the day before - officially shelving their interest in Gonzalo Higuain in the process.

But Henry stated:

"What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?"

And it was a stunning rejection for The Gunners. Henry went on to later confirm that Arsenal had met a clause in his deal but they simply ignored it, suggesting that contracts in football are not exactly binding.

Thiago wouldn't have said no

Thiago Alcantara almost signed for Manchester United - news that was confirmed by his dad, Brazilian legend Mazinho.

Thiago was being heavily linked with a move to United in the summer but he joined Pep Guardiola, his former Barca coach, at the Allianz Arena.

But Mazinho admitted he could have become a Red Devil:

"Thiago was very close to signing with Manchester United. They watched him at the Under-21 European Champions, and after it was finished, they had talks. But they couldn’t find an agreement. Thiago knew it would be very hard to play matches at Barcelona, and his goal is to play with Spain at the 2014 World Cup."

Thiago went on to have a great season at Bayern - but didn't make the World Cup because of a late injury setback.

Chelsea loanees

Chelsea sent three young players out on loan deals for the season. Gael Kakuta and Patrick van Aanholt headed to farm club Vitesse Arnhem while Thorgan Hazard joined Zulte Waregem.

The latter of which became a massive success in Beglium and is now ready to embark on a new season with Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.
