Louis van Gaal couldn’t have hoped for a better start to life as Manchester United manager.
David Moyes watched his side lose 1-0 this time last year, but in contrast, van Gaal looked on comfortably as United secured a 7-0 win over LA Galaxy in front of a crowd of more than 80,000 fans.
There were two different elevens for each half of the game with Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw both making their debuts in the first 45 minutes of the game.
Van Gaal will be pleased to have seen Wayne Rooney get on the score sheet with a brace, which puts the boss under pressure when Robin van Persie links up with the side later in pre-season.
There was also a good performance for wide man Ashley Young, often criticised by the club’s fans for his inconsistency.
Young produced a measured and efficient performance, bagging two goals himself during the game to do his chances of featuring this season no harm at all.
He made the right decisions in key areas of the pitch and showed great composure in front of goal to score, when it could have been easy to get flustered and make the wrong decision.
Reece James will also have impressed the new coach with a decent display of both defensive and attacking football, which allowed him to join Rooney and Young with two goals.
There are going to be tougher tests because one of the goals Rooney scored came after a glaring error from an LA Galaxy defender.
United next face Roma before matches against Real Madrid and Inter Milan, which will allow van Gaal to test things out tactically and examine where he needs to strengthen his team.
Here’s what Manchester United fans made of Ashley Young’s performance via social media website Twitter.
