Signing with Liverpool has not been the success story Sebastian Coates may have dreamed of.
A torrid debut against Tottenham, and a cruciate knee ligament injury were the dismal lowlights, with a memorable scissor kick goal against QPR the one positive.
With compatriot Luis Suarez sold, and rumours swirling that the Reds are close to signing another centre-back in Dejan Lovren, it would be understandable if the 23-year-old wanted a fresh start.
Brendan Rodgers showed however that the Uruguayan still has a chance, first by taking him on the club's US tour, and then selecting him to start against AS Roma.
Coates played 60 minutes before being replaced by Daniel Agger, who deflected Marco Boriello's late winner into his own net.
As far as re-introductions go, it was a competent and confident one from the centre-back, who did not play at all for the Reds last year and is coming back from a serious injury.
Liverpool may be using this time to get him match fit, impress, and earn a move elsewhere, or it could lead to a loan switch.
With Skrtel, Agger, Sakho, established in front of him and Dejan Lovren linked in, competition for places will be fierce.
Then there is Kolo Toure too, should he remain at the club, while youngster Tiago Ilori is another prospect with upside.
The path for Coates is not assured, but all he can do is keep progressing and hope he can convince Brendan Rodgers he deserves to stay and play.
Watching fans were certainly impressed with him last night...
We should give Coates more chance!!! Was impressed by him tonight!!! #LFC— Brother Donald|LFC (@donaldEASYY) July 24, 2014
I know it was only 15 minutes AND only was a friendly but the Agger/Skrtel partnership worried me. Coates looked more comfortable. :/ #LFC— Connor McNeish (@ConnorMcNeish95) July 24, 2014
Coates is way better than Agger today! Please Rodgers get rid of Agger and bring Lovren ASAP! Sell borini and Lucas too!
