The Blues took on Austrian outfit RZ Pellets on Wednesday night to kick off their pre-season preparations in Klagenfurt and although Chelsea drew 1-1 in the match, manager Jose Mourinho was pleased with the performances of the club’s youngsters.
A number of senior stars stared including Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic, and John Terry but the boss gave opportunities to a number of young players and new signings.
New signing Felipe Luis started as well as youngsters Kurt Zouma and Mohamed Salah who signed in January, Marco Van Ginkel, Izzy Brown, Lewis Baker, and Patrick Bamford.
The Blues went down after 55 minutes leading the Portuguese coach to bring on Dominic Solanke, Oriol Romeu and Nathan Ake. The Blues eventually equalized via some fine play from Jeremie Boga, just 17 years of age.
The French midfielder certainly made an impression on the coach who said in his post-match interview:
“Even for the kids, when they go home and they join their under-21 or under-18 team I think for them it’s been a great experience I so happy with that.”
Teenager Boga scored four goals and made five assists across 17 appearances in the U21 Premier League last season with the Blues but the attacking midfielder will likely find his path to the first team blocked by some of the world’s biggest stars in Eden Hazard, Willian, Oscar and summer signing Cesc Fabregas.
