New MLS franchise New York FC announced another marquee arrival earlier today, Thursday, as long-reigning Premier League servant Frank Lampard has followed Spain legend David Villa to the city that never sleeps.
At a community event in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Lampard spoke of his "excitement" at joining the project. The Englishman signed a two-year contract and will wear the number 8 jersey that made him famous.
The transfer has sparked social media debate in England, as his former international team-mate Jamie Carragher - who was a defender for Liverpool ranked three highly-skilled midfielders in Lampard, Carragher's club-level captain Steven Gerrard and Manchester United playmaker Paul Scholes.
"Good luck to Frank Lampard in MLS," he said. "Played and roomed together for the u21's one of the best midfielders premier league has seen.
On the debate over whom was greater between three iconic English midfielders of the Premier League generation: Lampard, Gerrard or Scholes, Carragher commented: "They [are the] three best English midfielders for 20 years. Stevie tops the list and I think Frank just edges Scholes for the defining goals he scored."
He added: "I am talking about their ability as individuals. Gerrards performance in Istanbul [Champions League winning performance in the final] and Cardiff 12 months later [FA Cup winning performance in the final] put him top just in my eyes.
