Spanish football expert Graham Hunter has been speaking about the ongoing rumours linking Karim Benzema with a move to the Premier League. And it is not good news for reported suitors Arsenal and Liverpool.
The French international has long been linked with the Gunners, while Liverpool’s interest has been reported since Luis Suarez’s move to Real Madrid left Brendan Rodgers in need of striking reinforcements.
But in an interview with Talk Sport, Hunter poured cold water on the claims.
Backing up recent stories from the Spanish press, Hunter said, “Benzema is in the process of renewing his contract. It hasn’t been done yet, but it is very clear that Real Madrid see him as their principle striker.”
That is no surprise given his outstanding form for France at this summer’s World Cup, along with his goal-return of 112 goals in 235 appearances for Real, including 24 in 52 last season.
Arsenal’s need for a new goal-scorer has lessened somewhat following Alexis Sanchez’s arrival, but Arsene Wenger may still feel he needs another central striker to compete with Olivier Giroud.
As for Liverpool, Loic Remy’s impending arrival would certainly ease the pressure on Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert. But they could still do with a world-class front-man to replace the one who has so recently left.
Unfortunately for any and all interested parties, Benzema appears to be off limits.
