Liverpool midfielder: Competition for places has upped quality at Reds

One Reds player has been praising the qualities of the new arrivals at Anfield, and emphasised that the quality of the side increased.

With four players already through the door at Melwood, and plenty more likely to follow, the Liverpool squad is certainly getting a facelift, something that will have only positive repercussions according to one excising Reds player.

Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic have all come in to strengthen the squad, while the likes of Dejan Lovren, Loic Remy and Javier Manquillo are all said to be on the cusp of moves - and that is likely to be just the start, with a big name centre forward also sure to arrive to replace Luis Suarez.

But it appears Joe Allen believes the stronger first team squad is a huge improvement for the Reds, not just improving the club with their presence, but also forcing those already there to up their game in order to hold onto their first team spot.

"Since day one I've said they've [the new signings] looked really good," said the Welshman. "I've had the chance to play against Adam and Rickie quite a few times and they've always been tough competitiors and they've got great qualities.

"I'm looking forward to having them on our side. They've got attributes that are really going to help us during the season.

"There will be more competition, that goes without saying," Allen continued. "That's always a great thing to have in your team, that's what you want.

"I think it always brings out the best in everyone. You can see from training straight away the quality has been taken to a new level once again and that can only be a good thing from everyone's point of view."

Allen, who 26 appearances last season and now may see reduced playing time, was particularly full of praise for Markovic, saying: "Obviously he has only done a couple of sessions. But straight away, you can see the quality that he brings.

"I'm really excited to get the chance to play with him and train alongside him as well."
