Numbers 11-15 of 50 players from Ligue 1 that Premier League teams should be targeting this summer.
Every season the Premier League plunders France for some of its most prominent talent. This year has been no different. Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Rivière have joined Newcastle United, Bafetimbi Gomis made the jump to Swansea and Ligue 1 graduate Mathieu Debuchy upgrade to a place in Arsenal’s starting lineup.
Premier Leagues always look across the channel, and usually they find some excellent value for money. For every £30 million spent on Luke Shaw, you will find £8 million to invest in a player like Serge Aurier.
Over the next five days we will bring you 50 Ligue 1 players that the Premier League should be targeting for the new season. In no particular order, here are numbers 11-15.
Andre Ayew – Olympique de Marseille
Position: Left-Midfield, Winger
Andre Ayew is one of the most exciting and versatile players in Ligue 1. He can play on the wing, as a forward, even in the centre of midfield.
He wins more headers than he is given credit for, is a great passer of the ball and a tough competitor.
Unfortunately his versatility has stopped him becoming a star, various OM coaches have failed to get the best out of Ayew, and now it seems like the best time for a new start. His game suits the Premier League, someone would just have to decide where best to play him.
Ricardo Faty – AC Ajaccio
Position: Defensive Midfield
Suggested Clubs: Burnley, Aston Villa
Although he was relegated to Ligue 2 with AC Ajaccio at the end of the season, Ricardo Faty has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.
His long legs, rangy stride and defensive abilities would make him a great pick-up for a side looking to add some steal to their midfield. He is also a good passer of the ball and can control the game in midfield while breaking forward when the opportunity arises.
He added two goals and three assists last season, he was part of a poor Ajaccio side, but when they impressed, you could guarantee Faty was one of their most impressive players.
Bruno Ecuele Manga – FC Lorient
Suggested Clubs: West Ham United, Leicester City, Southampton
Commanding, strong, brave, it’s safe to say that Bruno Ecuele-Manga is everything you want from a Premier League centre-back.
He has been an absolute rock for Lorient since he was signed to replace Laurent Koscielny going to Arsenal.
Rarely is he beaten in a battle of strength, mentaly strong, aerially superb and just an all-round top player. Would make an excellent corner-stone of any defensive-line.
Idrissa Gueye – Lille OSC
Suggested Clubs: Stoke City, West Ham United, Aston Villa
If you are looking for energy, work-rate and a desire to win the ball at every opportunity, Idrissa Gueye is the midfielder for you.
The young Senegalese midfielder has come through the Lille youth ranks and is slowly making himself a mainstay at the club. He could develop more by taking responsibilities with the ball at his feet, but there is plenty of time for that side to take shape.
His physical shape has improved over the last couple of years, it would develop more in England and he could become a very important player for a club missing that dynamic spark.
Jeremy Morel – Olympique de Marseille
Suggested Clubs: West Brom, Hull City, Aston Villa
Slowly but surely Jeremy Morel has lost his place in the Marseille side to the young Benjamin Mendy, now 30 years old, he still has a few good years left in the tank.
Perfect if you need an attacking full-back that also can defend fairly well. Morel is quick, has a great left-foot and always plays with a lot of energy.
He can lose concentration at times and is prone to a couple of mistake now and again, but overall he has experience and a good feel for the game.
