Chelsea's former wonderkid Gael Kakuta reportedly attracting interest from Sporting

Once hailed as the next big thing at Chelsea, Gael Kakuta's time there appears to be nearing an end, with Sporting Lisbon reportedly looking to sign him.

Having failed to make the grade thus far at Chelsea, Gael Kakuta has seen his name linked with a permanent move to Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon, as he looks to kick start his career.

Originally arriving from Lens in 2007, in a move which later became surrounded in controversy, Kakuta was considered one of the club’s brightest prospects as a teenager, making his Premier League debut in 2009, aged 18, before going on to make five more top-flight appearances during the first-half of 2010-11.

However, after signing a new five-year deal in December 2010, the 23-year-old has failed to make another appearance for the Blues since, with subsequent loan spells at Fulham, Bolton Wanderers, Dijon, Vitesse and Lazio over the last few seasons proving fruitless.

With Chelsea continuing to bolster their deep squad with even more talent this summer, there appears to be no room for Kakuta at the club and it would be a surprise were he to remain at the club past the transfer window at this stage.

Things perhaps could have been somewhat different had the French midfielder impressed with Lazio during the second-half of last season. But, after seeing just five minutes of Serie A action off the bench, the current course of his career does not bode well for the future.

With one season left on his current deal, it seems Kakuta may never develop into the star he was once tipped to become. But his past potential at least means that opportunities will continue to arise for the moment, the Portuguese giants seemingly willing to take a gamble in the hope of him rediscovering some of that promise.

Having represented France at each level from under-16s to under-21s, the ex-wonderkid now faces a crucial point in his career, with chances at the top level sure to fade if the potential move to Sporting fails to prove productive.
