Southampton outlaw could be headed for Sampdoria

Saints striker Daniel Osvaldo could be set for a return to Serie A, with Sampdoria reportedly ready to offer the Italian a way out of St Mary's.

Incoming Southampton manager Roland Koeman announced yesterday that the £15 million striker was surplus to requirements on the south coast, prompting interest from a number of possible suitors.

Inter Milan and Napoli are reported to be interested in taking the 28-year-old on loan, but it's Sampdoria who appear to be the frontrunners in the race, with the Genoan club more likely to part with cash for the player.

Sampdoria's interest in the Italian international was confirmed by the club's president Massimo Ferrero on Twitter yesterday, during a light-hearted conversation with a fan.

The Sampdoria fan wrote; “Osvaldo is a dream. If it came true, I’d order a marble statue of Ferrero for my garden,”

To which Ferrero replied; “Start looking for a sculptor.”

It remains unclear whether or not this is a real signal of Sampdoria's interest in the player, but it has certainly done enough to excite supporters who would welcome the arrival of Osvaldo at Sadio Luigis Ferarris.

The Saints striker enjoyed the best two seasons of his career at Roma prior to making his move to the Premier League, scoring 27 goals in 55 games for the club.

Osvaldo spent the second half of last season on-loan at Juventus, after being exiled from Southampton following a training ground bust-up which ended with the striker head-butting team-mate Jose Fonte and breaking the defender's nose.

The 28-year-old failed to make much of an impact at the Italian champions, scoring just once in 11 games for the club.

Osvaldo's failure to return to St Mary's for pre-season training has left the club with little choice but to put their record signing up for sale, and with the obvious behavioural problems that come attached to the striker, the Saints could struggle to recoup the money they spent on the Italian last summer.
