Following Patrice Evra’s departure from Manchester United, there have been suggestions that Louis van Gaal will move for another left-back – with Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez most commonly mentioned.
With Alex Buttner now at Dynamo Moscow, Evra’s £1.5million sale leaves United with just one senior left-back, summer signing Luke Shaw.
The fact that Shaw is also still only 19 means that van Gaal clearly has a lot of faith in him. But while there is plenty of cover on the opposite flank – with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Antonio Valencia all able to cover in Rafael’s absence – the same cannot be said for left-back.
The result of that could be the emergence of a current United youngster who has travelled with the squad for their tour of the USA.
Tyler Blackett is a 20-year-old full-back who is yet to make his senior debut for the club. Loan spells at Birmingham City and Blackpool have given him a taste of first-team action, but aside from that he has made 31 appearances for United’s under-21 side.
Van Gaal may ultimately move for a new left-back, with both Rodriguez and Daley Blind regulars in the gossip columns, but Blackett will know this summer is his chance to show the new manager what he can do.
And with Evra and Buttner no longer at the club, the young defender will know his breakthrough could be tantalisingly close.
