Ligue 1's Top 50 Premier League targets: 6-10; Arsenal bound South American, and defender they passed on

Ligue 1 50 1-10

Numbers 6-10 of 50 players from Ligue 1 that Premier League teams should be targeting this summer.

Every season the Premier League plunders France for some of its most prominent talent. This year has been no different. Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Rivière have joined Newcastle United, Bafetimbi Gomis made the jump to Swansea and Ligue 1 graduate Mathieu Debuchy upgrade to a place in Arsenal’s starting lineup.

Premier Leagues always look across the channel, and usually they find some excellent value for money. For every £30 million spent on Luke Shaw, you will find £8 million to invest in a player like Serge Aurier.

Over the next five days we will bring you 50 Ligue 1 players that the Premier League should be targeting for the new season. In no particular order, here are numbers 6-10.

Serge Aurier – Toulouse FC

Position: Right-Back, Centre-Back, Right-Wing-Back

Suggested Clubs: Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur

Easily one of the best defenders in Europe, not even in the category of young defender. Serge Aurier is experienced in Ligue 1 and has impressed on the biggest stages of them all.

Aurier’s performances at the World Cup should lead to a move to a top team. Paris Saint-Germain are close to a deal for the 21-year-old, but there is still time for an English side to jump in.

Fast, strong, a great defender, brilliant going forward. He has all the tools to play in England

Marko Basa – Lille OSC

Position: Centre-Back

Suggested Clubs: Everton, Swansea, West Ham United

Marko Basa is one of the best defenders in France. He was one of the most important parts of Lille’s 21 clean sheets last season.

Basa is able to track the best strikers in Europe, and is very rarely beaten by pace despite not being the quickest.

Although he is 31 years old, he is still one of the fittest most active players at the club. Absolutely dominant in the air, he could be a wonderful signing for any side looking for an experienced centre-back.

Gregory Sertic – Girondins de Bordeaux

Position: Central-Midfield

Suggested Clubs: Newcastle United, Southampton, West Brom

Gregory Sertic is one of the most underrated midfielders in France. He finished with 10 assists last season in a poor Bordeaux side. He is an excellent passer of the ball, has great vision and can play long or short.

He’s not afraid to get involved on the defensive side of the game and could be the perfect central midfielder option. Think Yohan Cabaye but a little tougher and more athletic.

David Ospina – OGC Nice

Position: Goalkeeper

Suggested Clubs: Arsenal, Southampton

After an outstanding couple of performances at the World Cup, David Ospina is hot property at the moment. He was a wanted goalkeeper before Brazil, and now his stock has risen.

Ospina is an excellent shot-stopper, he has wonderful reflexes and great command of his area.

It’s not often you can pick up a cheap international goalkeeper for the price Ospina is available at.

Papy Djilobodji – FC Nantes

Position: Centre-Back

Suggested Clubs: Burnley, Leicester City, Norwich

The athletic Papy Djilobodji is an ideal signing for any club looking to add a talented centre-back to their squad.

He enjoyed an excellent first season in Ligue 1 with FC Nantes. Showing his powerful and athletic physique plus his explosive pace.

Big and tall, good in the air, he is the first into the tackle and is fearless in his pursuit of defensive stability. He would be an excellent signing for the sides trying to stay in the Premier League.
