The 21-year-old Manchester City defender is currently linked with interest from Serie A giants Roma but the Citizens are reportedly holding out for £15 million for the Serbia international.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger suggested the club might look to bring in a centre-back amidst suggestions captain Thomas Vermaelen could be headed for Old Trafford to join Manchester United.
With the potential arrival of Porto centre back Eliaquim Mangala at the Etihad as well as former Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna who can provide cover in the centre of Manuel Pellegrini’s back line for the likes of skipper Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis as well as youngsters Dedryck Boyata and Karim Rekik, Nastasic may be the player to go out this summer.
Whether or not Thomas Vermaelen stays on at the Emirates or is sold this summer, the Gunners only have three senior centre-backs in the Belgian and first-choice pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny whilst youngster Ignasi Miquel is still far from ready for the first-team.
Nastasic would be ideal for Arsenal in many ways – he is young but already has experience in the Premier League, Champions League and Serie A as well as earning 13 caps for Serbia despite his tender age. He is 6ft2” tall and is robust in City’s backline, enough to earn 20 appearances in all competitions last term.
Manchester United are linked with interest worth around £10 million for Vermaelen and Arsenal would be astute to snap up Nastasic for £15 million given the youngster’s quality, potential for being among the Premier League best in a few years time and his suitability in terms of his experience so far.
He would represent a massive improvement on the recently departed Djourou and could be brought in as an understudy for Mertesacker who is now 29.
By the time the German World Cup winner is around retirement age, Arsenal could have in Matija Nastasic a ready and able replacement to join Koscielny in a would-be 25-year-old top-level centre back.
