Chelsea's signing from Hadjuk Split is going to spend a year playing in the Spanish leagues.
The 19-year-old signed for Chelsea from Hadjuk Split earlier this month for an undisclosed fee but has been loaned to the La Liga side in order to get some more experience.
Given his age and the amount of competition there is for places in the Chelsea midfield, it is of little surprise that Mourinho wanted Pasalic to go out and get some experience by playing football at a high level, instead of rarely getting a chance by being cover for other players, and possibly being confined to playing in the under-21 team for the season.
He is quoted by Inside Spanish Football, saying: “I always wanted to play in La Liga and when I trained in London with Chelsea and José Mourinho, after ten days of training, José told me it would be better for me to go to Spain, because I’ll play in many big games against teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid. So, I wanted that experience and I’m happy that I’m here.”
The objectives of Elche are likely to be different than for a club like Chelsea for Palasic, so there could be a slight change in mentality from a club that is used to winning trophies, to a side that just avoided relegation from La Liga last season by finishing in 16th place.
There is no doubt he will come up against some of the finest footballers in the world, and that experience is likely to serve him well. If he impresses then maybe it will be the only spell that Chelsea feel he needs away from the club.
