One-time Brazilian international and former Arsenal and Fenerbahce player Andre Santos has spoken out after being 'punched and kicked' by fans of his own club.
The attack occurred on Sunday, after Flamengo lost 4-0 to Internacional, a result which ensured they stayed bottom of the table in the Brasileirao.
Santos, who played all 90 minutes in the defeat, was set upon by fans as he left the stadium.
Speaking to Brazilian newspaper O Globo about the incident, he said: "I walked out the door and the club had a vehicle waiting. When I ran into more than 20 spectators.
"They saw me, there was not time to go back, and some fans attacked me with kicks and punches. I tried to protect my face, but I took many shots.
"Two police officers arrived and ended up helping. But until I get into the van, they beat me enough.
"As an athlete I am very upset by the event yesterday, especially the defeat. No player likes to go out and lose."
He then pleaded with fans for unity; "We know that Flamengo is greater than all that, then we need to work so that we can get out of it, but we need the strength of the fan so that we get out of this situation."
