With the World Cup over, the attention turns to pre-season games and that's no different for Everton. The club went for some warm weather training in Austria last week, and right back Seamus Coleman says he's glad to be back - but he is ready for the warm up fixtures to begin, starting tonight against Tranmere Rovers.
"We’re looking forward to all the games really," said the Irish international. "The training is tough but it’s all about getting fit for the [competitive] games and I’m sure all the lads will be eager to impress. So far it’s been a good pre-season and, though it has been tough, that’s what pre-season’s all about."
"I won’t complain because we had good weather in Austria last week and we’re all really lucky to do what we do. And we’re all looking forward to getting going now."
The Toffees will now be looking to hit the transfer market, and loan striker Romelu Lukaku is still on the club's radar despite returning to Chelsea. The Belgian international struggled to impress at the World Cup, and ex-Everton player Pat Nevin has his doubts over the 21-year-old - but thinks that Roberto Martinez could get the best out of the youngster.
"Lukaku is a very difficult one for me," said Nevin. "I was really disappointed with him because I’m only disappointed when good players don’t perform. When he puts it right, he is unstoppable. He is like Didier Drogba. He is phenomenal. But I watched a lot of Everton games last season and he would often be walking about and he was like that in the first couple of games for Belgium at the World Cup."
"I am not anti-Lukaku and hopefully Robbie can get that form out of him. If that happens then paying £20m for him will be good business because they will be able to sell him for much more," he added.
Whilst their £20m pursuit of Lukaku continues, Everton look set to clinch the signing of another Belgian forward as David Henen nears a move to Merseyside. The 18-year-old Anderlecht wonderkid spent last season on loan at Monaco's B team, and will seemingly complete a €1.5m deal having undergone a medical today.
