German tabloid Bild has suggested long term Arsenal target Julian Draxler could miss the start of the season for FC Schalke.
The German youngster was part of Jorgi Low’s World Cup winning squad and Bild has suggested his lack of playing time in Brazil means he could lack match fitness for the start of the Bundesliga campaign.
“Julian Draxler is a World Champion from the starting eleven – At the season’s start, he could still be sidelined because of a possible training hangover,” reports Bild.
The 20-year-old doesn’t appear to be carrying an injury problem after the World Cup, therefore the suggestion he could miss the start of the season can only be down to a lack of game time and match practice.
Schalke boss Jens Keller is unlikely to take any risks with the young forward because he will be one of the club’s most important players when he is fully fit and fully available.
The training hangover Bild mentions could be a reason that Arsene Wenger has decided not to make another strong play to sign him following attempts to do so last winter.
The Gunners were linked with a big money bid last winter, trying to get a deal done before the end of January but their interest appears to have cooled since.
Draxler has admitted that he’s quite happy to enter the next year of his contract, which expires in 2018, and if he makes it through pre-season training once his preparation for the new campaign increases, he should quickly go straight into the first team.
Not a lot changes in terms of Arsenal’s interest whether they move now, in the winter or next summer because Draxler will still have a long time to run on his deal, which means Schalke can afford to play hard ball over price.
