Manchester United offered a trial to a West Ham United teenager.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is renowned for his desire to work with young talent and, according to reports, he may well be set to scrutinise a precociously-gifted athlete who is already competing five years above his age-level.

Here are five facts about the player currently on trial at United.

1): Oscar Borg is 16-years-old. He is a wing-back and has already earned comparisons to Gareth Bale due to his style of play.

2): The youth coaches at West Ham United have reportedly been known to call Borg 'Gareth' but not because he is adept at competing at left back or left wing, but because they see him as a future Gareth Barry.

3): Borg's ability is so good that, just last season, saw him start the campaign with the Under 16 side before winning a promotion to the Under 18s, playing for them and then being named on the bench for an Under 21 game.

4): The teenager's rise to prominence has not gone unnoticed across Britain and United are not the only club vying for his signature as Southampton are also reportedly keen to nurture Borg into a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw.

5): Borg is already on trial at United and could well be swayed by the presence and history of van Gaal, but the Dutchman may well find strong competition from an old nemesis of his - Ronald Koeman - as the Saints, too, have an excellent history of developing youth players - Bale included.

Borg is believed to be available for £220,000 due to youth player compensation laws.
