West Bromwich Albion striker Victor Anichebe has been speaking about the club’s new record-signing Brown Ideye.
The latter arrived in a reported £10million deal on Friday, leaving Baggies fans wondering if they had just signed a bona fide goal-getter for what - in today’s market - equates to a relative bargain.
Ideye has scored 102 club goals to date; a record which should excite his new fans. But Anichebe feels people should temper their expectations.
Speaking to West Brom’s official website, the former Everton player said, “He’s done well in Ukraine after moving there for a lot of money. But I don’t think the fans should expect too much too soon from him.
“They should forget about the price-tag. The club pays what they want to pay for players. That’s not down to the player.”
Ideye moved from Sochaux to Dynamo Kiev for just short of £8million in 2011. And yet that transfer fee did not weigh heavy on his shoulders, as his 45 goals in 107 games proved.
But it would still be wise for West Brom’s fans to expect a settling-in period for their new player, who has the potential to be a star at The Hawthorns if he can ultimately replicate his previous club-form.
