New Real Madrid signing says it was his intention to stay with Bayern Munich before agreeing his move to the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid new boy Toni Kroos has said it was his intention to remain with Bayern Munich before he eventually decided to join the European Champions.
Kroos signed for Madrid following his World Cup triumph with Germany eight days ago, but wanted to stay with Bayern originally.
The 24-year-old says that an agreement could not be reached between him and his former club, hence his decision to begin a new chapter in Madrid.
"I first started thinking about a transfer when talks with Bayern were unsuccessful. Bayern were always my priority and I didn't talk to anybody else," Kroos told the German Football Association.
"I then decided to go for a new challenge after we failed to reach an agreement with Bayern and a number of clubs showed an interest in signing me.
"I didn't leave Bayern because I didn't feel valued. I played for one of the biggest clubs in the world and was a starter under several coaches. I always played in the major competitions and Bayern always looked after me.
"This club is just the right step for me."
Kroos will join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and potentially James Rodriguez at Real, where they have assembled a squad that is more than capable of defending their European crown.
Although Bayern has now been revealed as Kroos' original choice for his playing future, Madrid will also provide him a platform to win major honours for years to come.
