Tiago Mendes has signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid.
Free agent midfielder Tiago Mendes had been expected to sign for Chelsea this summer, but has re-signed a contract with Atletico Madrid.
The Portuguese ace was part of Atletico's La Liga winning side last season, but had allowed his contract to expire at the end of last month.
He was strongly linked with signing for Chelsea, who he played for under Jose Mourinho in 2005/06, and had also been linked with moves to the Middle East and for La Liga side Valencia.
Atletico Madrid have announced on Monday evening that the midfielder will re-sign with them for next season.
Tiago said: "I felt proud because we had had an incredible season, but I had thought it was the right time for the cycle to come to an end.
"I have been offered the chance to play in various international leagues and have taken some time to evaluate my options during the summer, but my final decision became clearer, and Atletico was the only option."
Tiago's potential return to Chelsea never made great sense from a playing perspective, with him now 33-years-old, and Atletico Madrid will be glad to re-sign him.
He should also be grateful that manager Diego Simeone values his overall contribution to the club highly, and was prepared to extend an offer to bring him back.
