The young Belgian may find himself at the centre of a transfer tug of war between several clubs, and covering more than just his own future.
Much of Liverpool's transfer business this summer has been hard work to say the least. Though Rickie Lambert's signing was fairly clean cut, the transfers of Emre Can and Adam Lallana both took several weeks to conclude, while their pursuit of Dejan Lovren is yet to be resolved.
Whether the knowledge that the Reds are sitting on the Luis Suarez pot of money is playing a part in the more difficult negotiations, or it is merely a case that the club are reining in their interest to pursue other targets, it is difficult to say, but another young player they had previously been reported to be on the verge of signing is likely to be another deal that isn't as clean cut as Brendan Rodgers would like.
PSV's young Belgian winger Zakaria Bakkali, who is set to have a huge future in the game and has already been capped by Belgium to ward off interest from Morocco, was said to be close to joining Liverpool over the weekend.
However, with PSV eager to bring Steven Defour back to the Eredivisie this summer, Porto may be set to include 18-year-old Bakkali as part of a deal.
Last year was Bakkali's breakout season, with the forward scoring 3 time in 16 games despite his tender years.
Liverpool will be eager to make sure they can secure the future of a player set to be the next Belgian sensation, and may have to pay over the odds to do so.
The next few days will likely indicate whether the situation will be resolved in Liverpool's favour.
