Report: Hummels to United for €20m almost complete barring last-minute twist

A report in Spain claims Manchester United are on the verge of bringing defender Mats Hummels to the club.

Manchester United are closing in on the €20m signing of Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels according to Spanish newspaper Sport.

The report claims that discussions between United and the Bundesliga side went on throughout last week, and that barring any last minute issues the move should go through imminently.

The report certainly adds credence to Ed Woodward’s suggestion that things were going on behind the scenes. But if this is true, it is fantastic news for United and their fans.

Hummels is an outstanding defender and is arguably the best option to strengthen a back-line in desperate need of reinforcements following the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

But questions will be asked of the fee, which at a reported €20million does seem too good to be true.

After all, Hummels has a contract in Germany until the summer of 2017, and despite the signing of Matthias Ginter it is the older of the two German internationals who many believe is among the best centre-backs in the business.

Still, if true, United will be getting a truly impressive defender and the transformation under Louis van Gaal will be in full swing.
