Kevin Strootman has been linked with Manchester United for quite some time now. But following Louis van Gaal's appointment as the new manager, those rumours went into overdrive.
A favourite of the 62-year-old for his now-former Netherlands side, Strootman is exactly the type of midfielder United need as they look to return to their former glory.
The Dutch international's anterior cruciate injury ended his World Cup hopes and led to a number of media outlets suggesting van Gaal would make his move not this summer but in January.
But expect the rumours to ramp up once more following the news that Strootman has gone on tour with current club Roma, where they will come face to face with United.
The two sides meet in the USA on 26 July, and while few will expect the 24-year-old to feature so soon, the very fact that he has recovered enough to be included in the touring party suggests his recuperation is coming along nicely.
The player posted a picture on his official Instagram account of him at the airport, along with the message, 'Going to Boston'.
If what only recently seemed impossible does happen, and Strootman turns out in just a matter of days for the Italian side, van Gaal may just feel the time is right to make his move.
But even if most of his tour is spent with a watching brief, it is clear a player United would love to have at their disposal will be back on the pitch sooner rather than later.
