Alan Irvine on why he's signing Andre Wisdom

Andre Wisdom is set to complete a season-long loan move to West Bromwich Albion, and manager Alan Irvine has been talking about why.

New West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine has said that a conversation he had with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers convinced him to sign defender Andre Wisdom on loan from the Reds.

Wisdom has made 22 appearances for Liverpool and has looked impressive at right-back, but last season he was sent on loan to Derby County in the Championship.

Now it looks as though Wisdom will complete another loan move to West Bromwich Albion this week as he looks to get more experience, this time in the Premier League, after Irvine has said a deal has been agreed between the two clubs.

Irvine is quoted in the Birmingham Mail: "I've spoken to Brendan, who I've known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly.

"He said Andre would do a good job for us. That is reassuring. You want to find out about the person you're signing.

"You can see the player but what are they like as a person? So that was important to us."

Irvine, who was assistant manager at Everton under David Moyes, has said the versatility of Wisdom is something that has attracted him.

Despite playing many competitive games at right-back, it would seem that Brendan Rodgers has tried to mould him into a centre-half during the past couple of pre-seasons, but it is clear he still has a lot to learn.

He is a powerful young man, though he does have this awkward way of getting around the field, he does seem to be a good reader of the game.

Irvine added: "He's a versatile lad. He's played as a right- back for Liverpool, he played as a full-back for Derby. he grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence against Preston."
