The reports could be a sign that Barca are turning their attention away from Ajax defender Daley Blind who is similar to Caio in the respect of versatility.
The Sao Paulo 20-year-old plays two different positions for his current side as a centre-back and as a holding midfielder player.
Blind was used in two roles for Netherlands during the World Cup with Louis van Gaal deploying him at left-back but predominantly in front of his back four to offer extra protection.
United are reported to be one of the sides well in the hunt for Blind and should Barca complete a deal for Caio, a subsequent move for Blind wouldn’t make a great deal of sense.
If Barca bought Blind as a left-back, then he’d surely be behind Jordi Alba in the pecking order at the club and the Dutchman is likely to join a side where he’s going to play regularly.
If Barca bought Blind as a holding player then again, he wouldn’t be first choice.
Barca already have Sergio Busquets who can play a holding role and Javier Mascherano is also capable of playing in that position.
Therefore, Blind could be put up against Caio competing to be the next in line for that position.
Caio moving into the centre of defence could eliminate that opposition for Blind but that move has the potential to allow Mascherano to move back into a holding role so either way Blind would be a third choice holding player.
The Catalan press suggested over the weekend that five clubs had made bids for the Ajax man and if Barca sign a similar player to play a similar squad role then that definitely works in Manchester United’s favour.
